These estimates are based on average standard rates. Your actual cost can differ depending on your health, tobacco use, coverage details, and how the policy is structured (such as how it's funded, its riders, and its benefit design), which varies by carrier.
These are rough estimates assuming good health. Real quotes may be higher or lower depending on the carrier and a full application. Not a real carrier quote.

Know Your Options
A quick look at the three types of life insurance in the estimator.
Term Life
- Pure protection for a set period, such as 20–30 years.
- Typically the lowest-cost option.
- No cash value.
- Coverage ends when the term ends.
Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.
Whole Life
- Permanent coverage for your whole life.
- Premiums never rise.
- Builds cash value you can borrow against.
- Typically the most expensive option.
Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.
IUL (Indexed Universal Life)
- Permanent coverage.
- Cash value growth is tied to a market index, such as the S&P 500.
- Gains are subject to a cap; a floor (often 0%) means index losses aren't credited in a down year.
- Policy fees and charges still apply and can reduce cash value.
- Growth can be near zero if the index underperforms.
Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.
Understanding Indexed Universal Life
Indexed universal life is permanent life insurance. Its main purpose is a death benefit for the people you love. Premiums are flexible, and you can add to what you're already paying, but federal tax law limits how much you can pay in. Within those limits, paying more in premium generally leaves more money in the policy after charges, which gives the cash value more room to grow over time. That growth is not guaranteed and depends on index crediting, caps, and policy charges. Paying more than the seven-pay limit makes the policy a modified endowment contract, which changes how loans and withdrawals are taxed. Illustrations show guaranteed and non-guaranteed values, and actual results may be higher or lower.
Why I Got Coverage
- My 20-year term policy: $500,000 coverage · about $35/month
- My IUL: $50,000 starting death benefit · projections not guaranteed
At 29, I realized I was spending more on takeout and drinks every month than on protecting my family, so I started with a 20-year term policy: $500,000 of coverage for about $35 a month, with critical illness, chronic illness, and terminal illness riders activated. It also lets me convert to permanent coverage later without proving my insurability again, so if my health changes, I'm not locked out.
The deeper I got into the insurance business, the more I heard about IUL, and the more I talked to people on the phone who were too sick at 65 to get coverage, who thought they had it through their job, or who thought they had more time. Life insurance is one of those things where the earlier you start, the more value it gives you over time, and waiting until life tells you your time is coming isn't a plan. So I added an Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policy to build something for my own future. It starts with a $50,000 death benefit, and the carrier's illustration projects $282,328 by age 65, with $231,417 in cash value after $72,827 in total premiums, assuming a 7.43% index rate (not guaranteed). It also includes critical, chronic, and terminal living benefits plus over loan protection. Those IUL figures are projections, not guarantees.
My term premium and IUL premium are separate. IUL projections come from the carrier's illustration, are not guaranteed, and depend on index performance and policy charges. Living benefits and cash value access depend on the policy, carrier, and state.

Important Disclosures
The figures on this page are based on my personal Index Universal Life policy and the carrier's current illustration. Cash value and death benefit projections are not guaranteed — they depend on index performance and policy charges, and actual results may be higher or lower than projected. Premiums are not tax-deductible, and loans or withdrawals may reduce the death benefit and cash value. Guarantees are backed solely by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. I am an independent life insurance producer licensed in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
